One of the main characters is George. A letter of him to Curley could look like this:
The novel is about two friends who are finally finding a job at a farm and getting into the farmworker life. The one man George, is looking after his friend Lennie who has a mild mental disability.
The book's setting plays at a farm in California. It is a beautiful, wooded area at the base of “golden foothill slopes. The character Lennie doesn't change during the story, his mental issues staying the same. Georeg's Charter changes, he finds out that it was wrong to play with Lennie's issues and bringng him in danger. The books writingstyle is honest and the language is how the farmworker would talk, simply and compelling, like the characters are. He uses symbols, like the old dog and the old farmworker candy and the two friends, George and Lennie. 1. "George, why are you looking after Lennie?"
"We are cousins and friends for a long time, even if he is annoying, he is my friend. We have a history and we kinda look together for each other. It is my main purpose in life, just got used to him." 2. "Do you think your life would be better without Lennie?" "Yes of course. He's the only reason I have no money and get always in trouble. Without him I would be free, could do anything I want and have a girlfriend. Honestly my life would be much better without him." 3. "What is your plan for the future?" I want to be independent. Living in my own house and haveing my place, maybe a little farm with animals. I don't want to go around anymore and look for work." 4. "Why did you and Lennie loose your old job?" "Because of Lennie, he messed up, that's the only thing he can do. Never listens when I'm talking. He wanted to touch the Women's dress and she though he's raping her. We had to escape and now we are here, hopefully Lennie will be nice!" 5. "What do you think about Curley? "I think he's pretty agressive and I have a feeling that he'll get Lennie. Seems like he's having an eye on us, only because I was talking for Lenny. Crazy this huh, is always looking for his wife." 6. "What do you think was right to do with Candy's dog?" "It was right to kill him. He was old, he smelled and he annoyed me. Good act of Carlson." 7. "How is Slim's relationship to Lennie?" "Slim seems to kinda accept how he is. Always saying that he's a good man. He's standing up for him, have no idea why he's doing it." 8. "Do you want Candy at your dream place?" "To be honest not really. He seems fine, but it was my dream for a long time, alone. Only me and Lennie, not sure if I can trust Candy and if he can stand Lennie. The story sets in the 1930s on a ranch in California. The atmosphere is described as a quiet place with “golden foothills“ and a “green hillside“. Because the two men are so thirsty it should be hot and dry. They have nothing and looking for work and finding a job on a humble farm. The 1930s are calleds the great depression, after the stock market crash in 1929, peope got from wealth to poverty and lost everything. The party life from the 1920 was finished and the real life hit the people out of their dreams. The setting on the countryside on a farm is a good example for hard work and no fun. The poverty of the two men represents the poverty of the nation.
